During an inauguration day in office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reinvent” the metropolis, declaring “a fresh chapter” and an bold start to his term.

An Unprecedented Leader

The young figure, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A moment like this comes rarely and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose hands are upon the controls for transformation,” Mamdani remarked.

Ignoring suggestions to lower expectations, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will lead expansively and audaciously.”

Governing with Socialist Ideals

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his political ideology. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not compromise my convictions for fear of being called radical,” he said to an enthusiastic response.

The inauguration was a dual event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's rise as a victory over the status quo.

An Ambitious Platform

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a plan including:

• Subsidized daycare
• Fare-free public buses
• A rent freeze for about 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion price tag of these services may prove difficult to finance. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating External Dynamics

The new mayor also faces apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past comments.

Mamdani has attempted to address these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly surprisingly productive.

The Core Tests of Governing

Ultimately, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in delivering city upkeep: trash collection, curbing the rodent problem, fixing roadways, and making sure smooth transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's public safety record, citing record low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a quirky piece of advice about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his remarks with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
